Get to know Alyson:
Why did you choose Health Science at Mizzou?
I chose Health Science because it felt like a true bridge between pre-med requirements and the
human side of healthcare. It did not just check boxes for medical school, but it helped build a
foundation in how health actually works in the real world. It gave me a pathway that supports my
medical goals while shaping how I think about caring for people, not just treating conditions.
How has your time at Mizzou shaped how you are today?
Mizzou shaped who I am because it turned uncertainty into confidence. As a first-generation
student, I came in feeling like I had no idea how to navigate everything and over time, I learned how
to advocate for myself and take ownership of my goals. The culture here is welcoming, but it also
pushes you to grow if you lean into the endless resources and opportunities. I did not just gain
experiences at Mizzou, but I truly feel like I found my direction and confidence that I belong in
medicine.
Tell us more about how you’ve gotten hands-on experience!
My favorite hands-on experience has been working as a medical scribe at the University Hospital
because it has given me a front-row seat to clinical-decision making, teamwork, and how physicians
communicate with patients. I have learned so much by observing skilled surgeons. Being in that
environment has made medicine feel real in the best way. It confirmed that this is the kind of work I
want to spend my life doing.
