What does graduating from the Mizzou College of Health Sciences mean to you?
Graduating from the Mizzou College of Health Sciences means opportunity. It has equipped me with the skills I need to take on graduate school, but for others it has provided the essential skills to jump into the workforce. My professors and peers have inspired me to be passionate and find causes that I care about; they have given me the confidence and ambition to become an advocate. The very concept of advocacy not only opens windows of opportunity for an individual but also drives access and equality for people in need and for marginalized groups, giving them the chance to thrive.
What activities have you been involved in along the way?
On campus, I have taken part in leadership for MizzouThon. This organization is full of individuals who are compassionate and fervent about philanthropy. MizzouThon offers a unique and refreshing perspective on philanthropy, as these people are driven to help kids by a pure commitment to the cause rather than personal gain.
Who helped you during your college journey?
My close friends, professors, mentors and coworkers have all aided in my college journey. However, one person sticks out to me the most: my mom. She is my pillar, the person to pick me up when I’m lying on the floor, my lunch date, my second advisor, my cheerleader and my best friend. She has eased my college experience in terms of stress — both personal and material — but she also inspires me. My favorite attributes about myself, my empathy and compassion, are a reflection of her. I could not be more fortunate than having the support system surrounding me here at the MIZ.
What memories stand out from your time at Mizzou?
My favorite Mizzou memories are as one might expect: gamedays, but maybe not for the reason you’d expect. I work a part-time job as a server and bartender in downtown Columbia. I often work gamedays, which to some may seem like a bummer. But I get to interact with so many Mizzou fans and witness the pure joy of this community. Fans swarm into the restaurant to either prepare for or commemorate the game, and the energy and vibrancy that I get to feed from is like no other. Win or lose, the Tigers are here to celebrate — and no one does it better than Mizzou.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I am attending a doctor of physical therapy program! I could not be more thrilled about my journey in continued education.
What advice do you have for current and future students?
To the students at the University of Missouri: Don’t get caught waiting for the perfect moment to act. The truth is, now is as good a time as any to start creating the life you want. Take risks, make connections and push yourself to try new things. Some of the best opportunities don’t come in perfect packages; they show up when you say yes, when you take a leap of faith, when you step out of your comfort zone and out of the norm. Engage in the present, and enjoy the little things we so often overlook.
