Sept. 14, 2021

Sept. 1, 2021

This piece is part of a series introducing all new faculty members for the academic year 2021–22. Stephen Ball has been a nutrition and exercise physiology professor with MU Extension since 2001. Now, as part of a cohort of several Extension faculty who are joining the School of Health Professions, he will teach and conduct research in the Department of Physical Therapy.

Professor, Physical Therapy

What brought you to Mizzou/MU Extension?

I grew up in Kirksville, MO and have always been a Tiger fan. I was fortunate enough to play baseball for Mizzou from 1990-1994. I was even more fortunate to find a job at MU in 2001 and come “home” after receiving my doctorate at Arizona State University.

What sparked your interest in physical therapy?

It was my sports background that attracted me to exercise physiology and the reason I stayed in the field.

What are you most excited about in the upcoming semester regarding your Extension programming at the School of Health Professions?

We are enthusiastic about continuing to develop our new Fitness Programming Management (FPM) degree program. The FPM faculty are developing three new classes this semester; all course development will be complete by June 2022. In addition to FPM, we continue to expand our body of research and delivery of Stay Strong Stay Healthy, an MU Extension strength training program for older adults.
