“If it won’t matter in five years, don’t worry about it for more than five minutes.”

What does graduating from the Mizzou College of Health Sciences mean to you?

It means a lot. The clinical experiences that I have received thus far have truly prepared me to begin my career as a speech-language pathologist.

What was one of your favorite classes within your degree track?

My favorite class was Neurological Bases of Speech and Language. I have always been interested in how the brain works regarding speech, language, cognition and swallowing.

What activities have you been involved in along the way?

I have participated in research labs for Dr. Mili Kuruvilla-Dugdale and Dr. Stephanie Knolhoff, participated in MSHA Quest for the Cup and as a Tech Talk Presenter, volunteered for workshops and completed outplacements at University Hospital and the Harry S. Truman VA.

Who helped you during your college journey?

The individuals who helped me most would be my research mentor, Dr. Stephanie Knollhoff, and my graduate and clinical supervisor, Professor Lauren Laur. They both provided a ton of helpful advice to lead me to my current interests in the field.

What memories stand out from your time at Mizzou?

The memories that stand out to me the most from my time at Mizzou were conversations with my classmates in the workroom between clinic and classes. It was where we would often unwind and vent between classes and clinic. As a cohort, we all got along very well, which I am super grateful for!

What are your plans after graduation?

I received an offer to work for the Puget Sound Veterans Hospital in Seattle, Washington. I hope to work primarily with CVA, polytrauma and ALS patients.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

I would advise you to learn as much as you can during your graduate studies. Say yes to as many options as you can manage to invest in your future career. During the tough times of your degree program, maintain perspective and keep remembering what is driving you to pursue your career!
