What makes Mizzou feel like home?
Being an out-of-state student was scary at first, but Mizzou quickly made it feel like home. Meeting my roommate, who was also in Health Science, helped a lot, and the campus itself soon started to feel familiar and welcoming. I stepped out of my comfort zone and have truly loved my experience so far. I’ve joined things on campus and gotten involved in the community, which has helped me grow and find my place.
Tell us more about how you’ve gotten hands-on experience!
Within CHS, they offer OT Swim for children who have autism and are learning to become safe around the water. I taught swim lessons in my hometown, so this really felt like a great experience to combine my passions. On Sundays, a group of us hosts sessions at the Rec for the kiddos who attend. We help them learn how to enter the water safely and practice basic water skills. This is really special to me because of my passion for supporting developmental delays and wanting to give back.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Within the College of Health Sciences, everyone is so welcoming and genuinely there to help. My biggest advice is to take advantage of the resources on campus—there are so many available, and they make a huge difference. I’d also remind new students that it’s okay not to have everything figured out right away. Everything takes time, and the college truly wants to see you succeed. Finding your community within CHS can be incredibly impactful and help you feel at home faster.
