Lauren Widman

, University of Missouri School of Health Professions Student Ambassador

Lauren Widman is a Speech Language and Hearing Sciences major from Parkville, Missouri. She plans to move on to graduate school and eventually work as a speech-language pathologist.

“While you might feel intimidated at first, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and get involved with something on campus,” Lauren says. “Taking that first step will change the course of your college life and help you to grow in confidence and strengthen your abilities. Joining an organization or club on campus that interests you will allow you to meet friends who share similar joys and passions and help you to make this big place feel more like home.”

In addition to serving on the CHS Student Ambassador Leadership Team, Lauren is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, and also volunteers with City of Refuge as a homework helper for children of refugee families in the Columbia, MO area.

What should make students choose Mizzou?

Mizzou offers an incredible number of opportunities for students to grow not only academically, but socially as they go through college and explore their independence. The faculty is always there to help you through anything and push you to accomplish things you never thought possible.

How did you choose your major?

I have always loved the idea of working with kids when I got older and learned about speech pathology through exploring various careers working and connecting with children as much as possible. I learned how speech pathology could allow me to work with children in a more personal setting in which I can utilize my strengths to help guide and encourage them.

What’s your favorite Mizzou club/organization?

While I’m not a part of it, I love Mizzou RAMS and all the events and activities it puts on to support MS! Everyone in RAMS is so spirited and hardworking and I hope to join soon!

If you could give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen, what would it be?

Have confidence in yourself, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and take a step out of your comfort zone! You will be surprised how much you’ll grow as a person when you branch out and explore the opportunities surrounding you

What is your favorite ice cream/coffee shop in CoMo?

Randy’s hands down has the best custard (sorry Andy’s) and my favorite coffee shop would have to be The Grind!
