Several DMU students and faculty were recognized for their work at this year’s Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Conference. The conference featured an awards presentation, a keynote speech from the SDMS founder and presentations regarding advancements and best practices in sonography.

Annie Hurst and Annie Lewis were awarded in the Original Research category of the W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award. This award is given to students demonstrating outstanding achievement in diagnostic medical sonography writing.

Hurst was the first-place winner in the category for her paper, “The Impact of Sex and Height on Femoral Intercondylar Width as Assessed with Ultrasound.” Lewis received second place for her paper, “The Gastrointestinal Response to Stress Detected by Ultrasound.”

In the SDMS Scientific Presentation Competition, Doug Clem, a DMU clinical professor and coordinator, and DMU students Brooklyn Stephens, Maddy Scott and Tori Gowen received second place for their work entitled, “Diagnosing Temporal Arteritis: Can Ultrasound Replace Temporal Artery Biopsy?” They were one of five finalists to present their work at the conference.

The conference took place virtually from Sept. 25-27, and this year marked the 50^th anniversary of SDMS.
