June 5, 2025

Name: Dave Gardner II

Title: Community Outreach Manager, Children’s Mercy Kansas City

Mode of MHA Degree: Residential

What have you been up to since graduating from the MHA program at Mizzou?
Since earning my MHA and MBA from Mizzou in 2023, I relocated to Kansas City, MO, where I completed a one-year administrative fellowship at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. During my fellowship, I led the end-to- end recruitment and interview process for two administrative fellows and a graduate intern, ensuring a seamless and effective onboarding experience. I also conducted a comprehensive analysis of community organization data, demonstrating a tangible return on investment and identifying key areas for improvement, driving data-informed decision-making.

Additionally, I led a cross-functional team in executing a large-scale external needs assessment across 44 school districts as part of a national collaborative. This initiative provided valuable insights and best practices to enhance the organization’s support for community and child education.

Upon completing my fellowship in May 2024, I transitioned into my current role as the Community Outreach Manager in the Office for Community Impact at Children’s Mercy. In this role, I oversee partnerships, community outreach, and civic sponsorships for the hospital.

Beyond my professional responsibilities, I actively contribute to the community through board service. I currently serve as a Director on the MHAAO Board (Master of Healthcare Administration Alumni Organization), the BIG Impact Group at Big Brothers Big Sisters Kansas City, and the Connect: Emerging Nonprofit Leaders Board.

When it comes to your career so far, what are you most proud of?
One of the aspects of my career that I’m most proud of is my growth as a people leader—particularly in leading teams and initiatives without direct authority. Guiding groups that don’t formally report to me requires a deeper level of trust, collaboration, and influence, which has strengthened my ability to communicate effectively, lead with empathy, and foster strong relationships. I take pride in my ability to gain buy-in, create alignment, and drive meaningful outcomes, all while embodying a servant leadership mindset. This skill has been instrumental in my success, allowing me to navigate complex projects, engage stakeholders, and inspire teams to work toward a shared vision.

How did your experiences in the MHA program prepare you for your career?
My experience in the MHA program provided me with a strong foundation in healthcare management, equipping me with the knowledge and practical tools needed to navigate the complexities of the industry. Through coursework and hands-on projects, I gained real-world problem-solving skills, including those acquired through earning my Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt, which have been invaluable in driving process improvements and strategic initiatives. Additionally, the program helped me refine my leadership, communication, and networking abilities—particularly through opportunities like Fall Institute, where I connected with alumni and industry professionals. These experiences not only prepared me for the technical aspects of my career but also reinforced the importance of relationship-building and collaboration in achieving meaningful impact in healthcare.

What advice do you have for MHA students who want to follow a similar career path?
My advice for MHA students pursuing a similar career path is to actively engage with the material beyond just memorization—focus on truly understanding concepts and applying them to real-world challenges you encounter in the news or at work. This will help bridge the gap between theory and practice, making the learning experience more valuable. Additionally, seek out opportunities to get involved outside the classroom, whether through internships, student organizations, or networking events. Building a strong professional network and developing practical skills early on will set you apart and provide a solid foundation for your career.

What is a favorite memory from your time in the program or a class that you really enjoyed?
My favorite memory from the MHA program was serving as the president of the Health Management and Informatics Graduate Student Association (HMIGSA). I truly enjoyed the opportunity to lead my class, foster connections among my peers, and create meaningful experiences for everyone in the program. Serving as president allowed me to engage not only with my classmates but also with alumni, professors, and board members, helping me build strong relationships that continue to be valuable in my career. Outside of leadership, I also loved participating in intramural sports like volleyball and soccer with my classmates—it was a great way to bond and unwind!

Why should potential students get their MHA from Mizzou?
I believe prospective students should choose Mizzou for their MHA because of the wealth of opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom. From student organizations to networking events, Mizzou provides a dynamic environment for both professional and personal growth on a vibrant campus. The program’s faculty brings extensive industry experience, valuable connections, and a genuine commitment to student success. Additionally, the support in securing internships and post-graduation job placements is outstanding, ensuring students are well-prepared for their careers. The strong and engaged alumni network further enhances the program, offering mentorship, career guidance, and lifelong professional connections.
