Name: Sara Sternberger
Title: Business owner
Mode of MHA degree: Residential
What have you been up to since graduating from the MHA program at Mizzou?
A lot! I have had a long career as a healthcare and nonprofit senior executive position and am now moving into my next chapter of starting my own business. I am still evaluating options and will keep everyone posted. However, I continue to be involved with Mizzou as the Vice President of the MHAAO and serving on the Board of Trustees for The Jefferson Club.
When it comes to your career so far, what are you most proud of?
I have often joined organizations/departments as the senior leader when those entities were under duress and in need of reform. Turning around an organization is hard work, but having a “call to action” and shared vision is key. You take a lot of body blows, but when you’re successful, it is worth it. Fortunately, I’ve been successful, and being open to criticism and listening, listening, listening is how you succeed. “Clear is kind,” and I believe that being a servant leader is what it takes to be a successful executive overall.
How did your experiences in the MHA program prepare you for your career?
As I look back, the classroom work was certainly important, but networking with alums and having real world experience through the internships and fellowships was really instrumental for my success.
What advice do you have for MHA students who want to follow a similar career path?
Be open. Say “yes.” Show your colleagues and bosses what you can do and are willing to do. Initiative is an indicator of leadership.
What is a favorite memory from your time in the program or a class that you really enjoyed?
We used to have a holiday party every year hosted by a faculty member. I think the 1st Years always did a skit. It was super fun!
Why should potential students get their MHA from Mizzou?
Our program is one of the best in the country, and Mizzou is a world class state university. Our alumni are so open and available to students and want to connect! You will never regret being a Missouri Tiger!
Anything else you’d like to share?
As an MHAAO board member, we are always looking for alumni participation, whether it be board service, committee involvement or being a speaker for our Forum Series. Reach out to us if you want to get more involved!
