Department of Health Sciences recognizes students and staff for exemplary work

The Department of Health Sciences is pleased to announce the 2025 award recipients. Let’s meet the winners and learn what these awards are about.
Academic Achievement Award
Sofia Ortiz
Sofia will be attending the University of Missouri School of Medicine starting in July 2025. She is currently interested in pursuing OB/GYN or Emergency Medicine, but she’s looking forward to exploring all areas of medicine as she begins this exciting new chapter.
The recipient of this award demonstrates academic excellence in all aspects of the Health Sciences curriculum, including grades, classroom participation, research involvement, and/or lab work. The recipient takes full advantage of educational experiences in class, on campus, and beyond.

Spirit of Achievement Award
Jenny Freeman
Jenny is a true leader and role model within our department and beyond. We can’t wait to see her thrive in Mizzou’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
The recipient of this award demonstrates unwavering positivity toward the program and student(s) career goals. Additionally, the recipient has demonstrated a supportive attitude toward his/her/their peers and service to others within the program. This student is an outstanding representative of the department, college and university within the local and distant community.

Truman Award
Matthew Cox
Matthew has returned to Kansas City to reunite with his partner, Greer, and is actively pursuing entry-level roles in case work and administration. Looking ahead, he plans to explore graduate programs in administration, social work, or law.
The Truman Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated the strength of character and determination that is exemplary of a Missouri Tiger. The recipient of this award has successfully overcome obstacles while pursuing his/her/their education.

Intern of the Year Award
Julie Whitlock
Julie recently submitted her applications to Physician Assistant programs and plans to attend PA school after graduating from Mizzou. She and her fiancé are excited to move wherever she’s accepted later this year.
The recipient of this award demonstrates a strong commitment to professional development as a student intern enrolled in Health Sciences 4975. The recipient is open to feedback, promotes a positive work environment, and seeks opportunities for growth while advancing the organization’s mission.

Staff Member of the Year Award
Debbie Betz
The recipient of this award has made a significant impact on students and the university through exceptional service, mentorship, and professional dedication. This staff member goes above and beyond to support student success, contribute to the department’s mission, and strengthen our academic community. The award honors a staff member who exemplifies excellence, teamwork, and a commitment to the field of Health Sciences.
