June 24, 2025

Congratulations to University of Missouri School of Social Work alumnus Mat Gass, who has been named chief executive officer of Burrell Behavioral Health.

This marks a significant milestone for Gass, who becomes only the third CEO since the organization was founded in 1977. His ascent to this top leadership position exemplifies the proven impact and collaborative spirit of Mizzou’s social work alumni.

“This is the most humbling experience I could ever imagine, to join an organization as a social worker almost 15 years ago with the belief that community should be at the core of everything we do to leading that organization into the future,” Gass said. “Whether we are working with a therapy client in a small town or innovating at the state and national level, our commitment to community and quality care drives everything that we do.”

Gass has more than 25 years of experience in behavioral health care, including 15 years with Burrell. The native of Ohama, Arkansas, received his Master of Social Work from Mizzou in 2006.

Burrell Behavioral Health, which is part of Brightli, Inc., employs more than 2,000 dedicated professionals across Missouri who deliver essential mental health and substance use services.

Gass said he will continue to build upon Burrell’s strong foundation, meeting individuals wherever they might be and providing them with accessible, high-quality care.

Brightli CEO C.J. Davis lauded Gass’s ability to “make every member of the team feel seen, heard and valued.”

“As we continue to strengthen our organization and offer more health care services in more communities, we need clear direction and compassionate leadership,” Davis said.

Gass embodies Mizzou’s commitment to pioneering breakthroughs and empowering individuals. His leadership at Burrell Behavioral Health will continue to drive forward the critical mission of community mental health centers, ensuring that vital services reach all who need them.
