What does graduating from the Mizzou College of Health Sciences mean to you?
As a first-generation Eritrean student, graduating from Mizzou College of Health Sciences is a moment of immense pride and reflection. It not only represents my personal achievement, but it also is a tribute to my family’s resilience and sacrifices. Growing up with Eritrean values rooted in hard work, community, and perseverance has shaped my journey, and I am honored to embody these principles.
What was one of your favorite classes within your degree track?
One of my favorite courses was Health Science 4400: Culture and Health Literacy for the Health Professions. This course resonated deeply with me because it highlighted the importance of respecting diverse cultural backgrounds — especially in a health care setting. This class allowed me to reflect on my own cultural identity and learn from others as well.
What activities have you been involved in along the way?
I have been involved in Mizzou’s Pre-Physician Assistant Association since my freshman year at Mizzou. It has provided me with numerous resources and support throughout my journey toward my goal of becoming a physician assistant.
Who helped you during your college journey?
Throughout my college journey, my family and friends supported me the most. My parents and three sisters all provided support throughout tough classes and pushed me to keep striving for greatness. My friends were always there to celebrate milestones and were constant sources of encouragement and understanding. My community of support reminded me that they never stopped believing in me and my goals.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I will be moving back to my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. I will be attending Saint Louis University’s physician assistant program starting in August 2025. I am excited to move back to St. Louis, be closer to my family and friends, and begin the next chapter in my journey of becoming a PA.
What advice do you have for current and future students?
My advice for future and current students is to make the most of your journey. Remember to stay organized, set goals and focus on school, but it is also important to enjoy your college experience and live in the moment.
Lastly, always believe in yourself. Challenges and setbacks are bound to happen, but use them as opportunities to better yourself.
