An interesting fact about you:
I’m an Advanced Open Water Diver.
What does graduating from the Mizzou College of Health Sciences mean to you?
After spending six years at this university and four years in this department, it means everything to me. The connections, memories and knowledge I have gained from this institution are surreal. The relationships I have with professors have significantly enhanced my educational experiences through mentorship, leading me down the right career path — one that I am passionate about.
What was one of your favorite classes within your degree track?
In terms of experience, my Greece trip. In terms of education, I cannot choose just one. They all connect in their special way, which is why I love this field. One class does not outshine the other in terms of theory and application.
What activities have you been involved in along the way?
Undergrad: Marching and Mini Mizzou drumlime/drumset
Graduate: Masters of Public Health Graduate Student Association
Who helped you during your college journey?
Advisors, staff and faculty who dedicate their time and energy to keep this program running. Dr. Jason Furrer and Dr. Paul Defigueiredo from the School of Medicine assisted me in developing my love for microbiology and manuscript writing. I thank Emily Mahler and Traci Scardina for hiring me to work for the Department of Experiential Learning and for fostering my passion for educating undergraduate students who seek to advance their education or careers. Lynelle Phillips helped me find my internship and carve out my niche in community health, particularly in needs assessments, narrative writing and epidemiology. Dr. Mansoo Yu, thank you for teaching me data collection, research methods and data presentation, and for allowing me to join the study abroad trip to Greece, which provided exposure to diverse health systems worldwide. Dr. Molly Vetter-Drier enhanced my knowledge of public health theories to better serve the community. Dr. Sonita Simelus for demonstrating various world systems’ budgets and how to integrate public health needs with cultural competencies. Finally, Dr. Wintemberg is the reason I chose this degree and this path.
What memories stand out from your time at Mizzou?
All the football, volleyball and basketball games I performed in when I was in Marching Mizzou. Homecomings. Meeting my fiancé on the first day of my graduate program.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to stay in the U.S. for one year to get some field experience, but then I will move overseas with my fiancé.
What advice do you have for current and future students?
Make connections, participate in research and stay attuned to your passion. It’s not work if you love what you do!
