What does graduating from the Mizzou College of Health Sciences mean to you?
Graduating from Mizzou’s College of Health Sciences is evidence of dreams coming true and hard work paying off. When I moved almost 500 miles to attend a university where I knew no one, I had no idea what to expect, but I was excited for the adventure. My three years in Columbia pushed me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to my limits more times than I can count; still, it also brought me better friendships, greater experiences, and more knowledge than I ever could have imagined. I’m forever changed thanks to my time as a Tiger!
What was one of your favorite classes within your degree track?
One of my favorite classes was Health Science 4420 — Health Literacy, Decision Making, and Behavior Changes — with Dr. Vetter Dreier. This class taught me how to understand my future patients and gave me practical skills for meeting them where they are in their health journey to support them in making appropriate behavior changes.
What activities have you been involved in along the way?
During my time at Mizzou, I have had the privilege of being involved in numerous organizations, including the CHS Student Ambassador leadership team, Pre-Occupational Therapy Association, Sigma Eta Rho, and Veritas. I’ve also enjoyed working as a Site Facilitator for MU Adventure Club, serving as a Welcome Week Leader, and studying abroad in the Culture, Public Health, and Social Service trip to Greece as a Gilman Scholar.
Who helped you during your college journey?
I have been incredibly blessed by the support system I have developed over my three years at Mizzou! Lexi Wolkow and Courtney Dougherty have nurtured me into the leader I am today, and MedOpp advisor Roni Becherer paved the way for me to be accepted into OT school. Additionally, professors Dr. Wintemberg, Dr. Yu, and Dr. Parrish inspired the way I view healthcare, provided needed encouragement, and guided me through academic challenges.
What memories stand out from your time at Mizzou?
I have made the best memories at Mizzou in all the little moments, from late-night Andy’s runs to sand volleyball games at Stankowski and dinners at Plaza. Still, some of the most meaningful memories come from the many Saturdays I spent at Memorial Stadium. Attending football games and hearing the other side of the stadium chant back “Z-O-U,” rushing the field after beating K-State in the last minute of the game, and singing Mr. Brightside in the student section were moments that I truly felt a sense of belonging to a community bigger than myself.
What are your plans after graduation?
This summer, I am excited to begin the Occupational Therapy Doctorate program with a specialization in Pediatrics at Ohio State University. My goal is to practice in a pediatric hospital and eventually become a professor.
What advice do you have for current and future students?
My best advice for current and future students is to say “yes” and show up. Even though it can be overwhelming seeing all the options and stepping outside of your comfort zone, becoming involved outside of the classroom is what leads to the best friendships, memories, and learning experiences. Not all doors will open, but you will be surprised by the ones that do if you take risks and believe in yourself.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Words will never truly be enough to express my gratitude and love for the University of Missouri. From the moment I stepped foot on campus the summer before my senior year of high school to now, with graduation approaching faster than I’d like, I have never felt more welcomed, known, and supported by a community. It’s no wonder we invented Homecoming because I have never felt more at home than I do at Mizzou.
