Aug. 29, 2024

This is part of a series of Q&As introducing faculty who have joined the College of Health Sciences for the 2024–25 academic year. Meet all of our new faculty members.

Amy Mayes

Assistant professor, School of Social Work

What classes are you teaching this semester?

I will be developing the online bachelor’s in Social Work program that will begin next year.

Tell us about yourself. What is your background?

I am a licensed master social worker. I earned my doctorate in social work from the University of Southern California, my master’s in social work from the University of Denver and my bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University. I have published research regarding mental health support for college student-athletes.

I believe in working with my clients using several modalities while utilizing holistic, multicultural and person-centered approaches. My passions include working with athletes post career and post injury, new moms, long-term caregivers and students. As a Colorado native, I love being outside in the sun and traveling.

What brought you to Mizzou? To your field?

I love developing and program managing. I believe in reaching diverse populations through online education options, and this job was a perfect fit.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

The team in the School of Social Work.

What has you excited for this semester?

I’m excited to develop classes that will shape the future of our online BSW program.

What is a fun hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?

Playing tennis and crafting.

What is a particularly memorable moment from your time teaching?

Recently, an old student of mine who had grown up in foster care and was at one point living in her car reached out to me to grab lunch. She shared with me that she was completing her master’s degree in social work and was also a supervisor for a local agency. Stories like this I always remember.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

My mom has always said, “Do your best, forget the rest.” It’s the first thing that crosses my mind.
