New faculty spotlight: Candace Rodman

Aug. 29, 2024

This is part of a series of Q&As introducing faculty who have joined the College of Health Sciences for the 2024–25 academic year. Meet all of our new faculty members.

Candace Rodman

Assistant extension professor and MOCAN executive director, Department of Health Sciences

What classes are you teaching this semester?

None this semester, but I will be teaching Introduction to the Research Process and Evidence Base-Writing Intensive next spring.

Tell us about yourself. What is your background?

My degrees are in Health Science (BS) and Sports Science and Rehabilitation (MS), and I am a student once again as I work through my PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Science here at MU! I worked clinically for a bit in physical therapy, but I’ve been teaching through MU Extension as a nutrition and health specialist in the northeast region of Missouri for more than five years before making the switch to campus teaching.

What is your favorite thing about your job?
A photo from my experiences hiking through the Great Smoky Mountains.

Because I get to work in the Department of Health Sciences and MU Extension, it’s almost like I get the best of both worlds! I get to teach on campus and learn constantly from colleagues and students, but I also get to continue working on policies that will impact the health and well-being of Missourians on a state and local level through Extension. My days are never the same!

What is a fun hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?

I LOVE cycling and hiking/camping! I will always search for a few bike races to sign up for in the surrounding states during the summer, but I have biked, hiked and/or camped in more than 20 countries around the world. And counting!

What is your hidden talent?

I paid for my master’s degree by working in construction. I remodeled homes for six years, so I can build or fix most things around the house. It’s definitely saved me a lot of money as a homeowner!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

“Pay attention to everyone in the room. If you admire someone, observe what traits make them admirable and aim to develop those qualities yourself. If you find someone unappealing, take note of why to ensure you avoid those traits.” –Aunt Sally
