Jennifer Kline
Assistant clinical professor, School of Social Work
What classes are you teaching this semester?
I will be assisting MSW students with planning foundational and advanced practicum placements. I am also supervising a student’s independent study in couples counseling this semester.
Tell us about yourself. What is your background?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience in a variety of practice settings, including the juvenile court system, forensic mental health, both inpatient and outpatient mental health and integrated care. I have worked with clients across the lifespan, with a wide range of needs and circumstances. I am most passionate about supporting underserved populations, and I enjoy working with youth and justice-involved individuals.
I was raised on a farm in rural Iowa and relocated to Missouri when I was in college. Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees are in social work.
What brought you to Mizzou? To your field?
I am proud Mizzou alumni and grateful for the opportunity to be part of the program that led me to a remarkable career. I entered practice at a time when options for graduate studies were very limited in northwest Missouri. Mizzou offered a unique off-campus program that involved interactive television long before online coursework existed. Without this innovative option, I may not have had the opportunity to advance my education.
I was drawn to the field of social work because of the broad spectrum of career opportunities it provides. I enjoy advocacy work, supporting others and being a catalyst for change.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
Teaching practicum courses and related seminars gives me a front-row seat to students’ formative development as social workers. I enjoy seeing them connect coursework concepts to practice and develop as professionals.
What has you excited for this semester?
I am looking forward to making new connections and meeting new students! I am assigned to distance learners and enjoy learning about social service programs across Missouri and in our neighboring states.
What is a fun hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy the company of my dogs, traveling, hiking and spending time at my local animal shelter. I volunteer as a dog-walker, take photographs of pups for marketing and rescues and showcase them at community events. I am on a quest to see all 50 states and enjoy visiting National Parks. I completed my first summit hike at Yellowstone last year!
Share a memorable moment from your time teaching – something funny, touching, or just downright unforgettable!
Last semester, I accompanied students to the State Capitol for Advocacy Day. It was a fantastic learning experience! Seeing the students advocate for social justice and policy change, connect with legislators and pursue their passions filled me with pride!
What is your hidden talent?
My father has always joked that I have the “gift to gab.” I can talk to anyone about anything! I enjoy meeting new people and learning from others.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?
A mentor once told me, “Capacity is a state of mind.” I appreciate a good challenge and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from stretching my capacity and learning something new!
