New Faculty Spotlight: Kelsey Weitzel

Sept. 13, 2021

Sept. 13, 2021

This piece is part of a New Faculty series in which we are introducing our new faculty members for the academic year 2021-2022. Kelsey Weitzel has been with MU Extension for almost five years, but is part of a cohort of nutrition faculty who are joining the school of Health Professions.

Kelsey Weitzel

Assistant Extension Professor, Health Sciences

Why did you choose to work at Mizzou?

I am originally from Iowa, but my family and I have always loved the state of Missouri.  I met someone from MU Extension at a national conference,   and became very fascinated by the mission and work of the organization when I saw there was a focus on nutrition and health. I was attracted to the variety of work I would be able to do with Extension! I have always wanted a job where I could help people, and this is exactly what I get to do on a statewide level! I chose to work for Mizzou because of the friendly faculty and staff, nature of work, and the impact this institution can have on the citizens of Missouri.

How long have you been with Mizzou?

November 2021 marks my five-year anniversary with Mizzou!

Please say a few words about why you are interested in healthy longevity?

In college, I noticed that many people became less active with age, but many adults had dreams of adventures after retirement. At that time, I personally made a commitment to remain as active and healthy as possible so that I could remain adventurous and do the things I wanted throughout life. I knew I wanted to help others do the same, so I declared my major in exercise physiology.  I want to help individuals not only live many years but many healthy years so that we do not dread growing older rather embrace the opportunities that exist as we age!

What are you most excited about in the upcoming semester?

I am very excited about the opportunities to work with like-minded individuals in the School of Health Professions, collaborate on research projects, and help students learn more about community-based education through Extension! I am also looking forward to continuing my PhD coursework and seeing some of my classmates in person for the first time in a long time.!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to spend time with my husband, son, and mini-Aussie outdoors or near a body of water (Lake of the Ozarks is a frequent destination). I also like to swim, bike, run, and anything active outdoors!
