New faculty spotlight: Maddie Stephan

Jan. 27, 2026

This is part of a series of Q&As introducing faculty who have joined the College of Health Sciences for the 2025–26 academic year. Meet all of our new faculty members.

Maddie Stephan

Clinical coordinator and assistant teaching professor, Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences

Tell us about yourself. What is your background?

I am originally from the great state of Indiana. I currently live in Linn, Missouri, with my husband, Caelob. We had our first child last November — her name is Carly, and she’s the sweetest. I enrolled at Mizzou in 2012, just hoping I’d get into the DMU program (thankfully, I did). I completed the undergraduate portion of the program in 2016 and decided to come back in 2019 to complete my master’s degree. I worked clinically for six years, and then I transitioned into education back in 2020.

What brought you to Mizzou? To your field?

I decided to pursue ultrasound when I was a sophomore in high school. I was “matched” with the profession on a career aptitude test — from that moment on, I never gave it a second thought. Truly, that test result changed my life. I love this profession, and I love teaching it even more! As a graduate of the DMU program, it was a no-brainer deciding to apply for the faculty position; the opportunity to mentor and support students the way my instructors did (back in the day) is so stinking cool.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

The students!

What has you excited for this semester?

Working with Alice, Dee and Janell!

What is a fun hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?

Oh boy, do I enjoy a good mindless TV show. “The Office” is my personal favorite.

Share a memorable moment from your time teaching – something funny, touching, or just downright unforgettable!

State Fair Community College has this award that goes to the Adjunct, Staff and Instructor of the Year. To be considered for this award, you have to be nominated by students. In 2022, totally unsuspecting and after a day where I had a complete competency crisis, I received an email that I had been nominated for Staff of the Year. A month later, I won. This will always be one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me (shout out to the SFCC DMS class of 2022)!

What is your hidden talent?

When I find it, I’ll let you know.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

During a team huddle while working at the hospital, one of our radiologists said, “You need to care about what you’re doing. If you don’t care, then why are you doing it?” It’s so simple, yet kind of profound!
