Aug. 29, 2023

This is part of a series of Q&As introducing faculty who have joined the College of Health Sciences for the 2023–24 academic year. Meet all of our new faculty members.

Sue Boren

MHA program director and professor, Department of Health Sciences

What classes are you teaching this semester?

I am teaching HMI 4430: Introduction to Health Informatics, HMI 8610: Consumer Health Informatics and the Chancellor’s Leadership Class.

Tell us about yourself. What is your background?

I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan. I have graduate degrees in health administration (MHA) and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (Ph.D.) from Mizzou. I have completed a postdoc in biomedical informatics research funded by the National Library of Medicine. I was elected as a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (FACMI) in 2022. I currently direct the MHA program (which has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education for 55-plus years) and led the MS in Health Informatics program located in the School of Medicine through initial CAHIIM accreditation in 2021. I chaired the Health Informatics Accreditation Council for the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education and currently serve on the CAHIIM board of directors.

What brought you to Mizzou? To your field?

I came to Mizzou in August 1991 to study for a Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree. At that time, the program in Health Services Management was located on the third floor of Clark Hall.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I love working with health administration students as they prepare for their future careers in healthcare.

What has you excited for this semester?

I am happy to have transferred to the College of Health Sciences on July 1. The College of Health Sciences is an excellent place for students in the Master of Health Administration program to grow professionally.

What is a fun hobby or activity that you enjoy outside of work?

I enjoy golfing and hiking with my husband Tom. We have two sons who are both studying at Mizzou.
