Rachel Proffitt Featured in Missourian
March 30, 2020
On March 19, Occupational Therapy professor Rachel Proffitt and her continued work on stroke research were featured in a special section of the Columbia Missourian called, “Boomtown.” The section features stories on how to live your best life in Columbia if you’re over the age of 50.
The article discussed Proffitt’s approach to stroke research through the use of new technologies. In the past, she utilized video games as part of treatment plans for her patients. Recently, she began working with infrared cameras and depth sensors in an effort to help her patients keep track of their health.
The goal of this research is to help patients remain independent in their homes with the use of these devices.
“We can pair the technology with established interventions in which we modify parts of their (discharged patients) home environment to make it easier for them to live. It would help eliminate barriers for them to live in their homes independently,” said Proffitt.
