School of Social Work alumnus Stan Remer was recently named a Social Work Pioneer by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) foundation. According to the website, “NASW Pioneers are social workers who have explored new territories and built outposts for human services on many frontiers. Some are well known, while others are less famous outside their immediate colleagues, and the region where they live and work. But each one has made an important contribution to the social work profession, and to social policies through service, teaching, writing, research, program development, administration, or legislation.”

Remer was nominated for this distinction by his colleague, Dr. William J. Spitzer, PhD, DCSW. Spitzer said, “Over the course of our twenty-plus year professional relationship, I have witnessed Mr. Remer demonstrate an exemplary, career-long record of commitment to social work and health care practice.”

Remer, who graduated from Mizzou in 1968, has served in several leadership positions in the social work field throughout the years, including:

1989-1991—President, Missouri Association of Hospital Social Work
1994-1996—President, University of Missouri School of Social Work Alumni Association and Chair for the 75th SSW Anniversary Committee
2016-2017—President, Social Work Health Care Leadership Foundation
