Admission

Application and admission information is detailed in the  Application Checklist and Program Information. It is advised to read this information before proceeding.

Admission requirements

Candidates applying to the DMU program must have completed or be in the process of completing appropriate prerequisite credits for the MU-DMU program (see program application materials) . A maximum of two outstanding math or science courses can be taken during the semester of application (includes Algebra, Human Anatomy, Elements of Physiology, Chemistry, Physics & Statistics.)

Any student interested in applying to the DMU program should meet with a CDS advisor, as soon as possible to verify eligibility.

Previously granted degree(s) and/or prerequisite course work may be completed at any regionally accredited university, college or community college if appropriate courses are available. Contact the College of Health Sciences advising office at 573-882-8011 to make sure any course that you have taken or will take off campus is transferable and meets our requirements for the DMU program. Prerequisite courses should be completed before beginning the DMU program for the term of application.

      • Complete all pages of the application to the best of your ability. Please be aware of spelling or other errors. The application form will need the following information:
        • Personal Information:
        • Academic Background
        • Experience (employment, volunteer, previous academic information, organization memberships, current or past licensures, awards, etc)
        • Final Statements
          • Confirm you have read and understand the Program Checklist and Program Information
          • Confirm you have read and understand the Background Check, Drug Testing, and Immunization Policies in the Program Checklist and Program Information
          • Confirm your understanding and ability to meet the Minimum Technical Standards as listed in the Application Information.

      • Proof of Enrollment (only for students currently enrolled in courses outside of the UM System)
  4. Application Fee. Submit the $40.00 Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Program application fee. If financial circumstances prevent you from being able to pay the $40.00 application fee, please reach out to the DMU Program Director.
    • Check or Money Order should be made out to University of Missouri.
    • Cash must be exact change. Do not send cash via mail. Make an appointment to drop off cash payment in an envelope with your contact information.
    • Credit/debit card payments may be made via Touchnet.

All application materials are due no later than Feb. 1.

It is highly advisable to schedule an appointment with an advisor in CHS Student Services to check your acceptance eligibility prior to submitting an application. The program director is also available to answer any questions you may have, and appointments can be scheduled as needed.

Physical requirements

Applicants to the DMU program must be physically capable of holding extended arm positions and prolonged application of pressure during ultrasound procedures. There should be no history of neck, arm, back or leg trauma that may prevent performing typical duties such as pushing and pulling ultrasound machines, assisting with patient care that may entail bending over and lifting patients in and out of wheelchairs and beds, as well as moving furniture in and out of patient rooms in order to perform ultrasound exams on the patient in the hospital room.

The applicant must have sufficient hearing and vision to assess audible and visual Doppler accurately. Applicants must be able to speak articulate English to effectively communicate with patients, including children and the elderly population, as well as with doctors and hospital personnel.

Criminal background check

The majority of your fieldwork placements will require the completion of a criminal background check. Depending on the specific placement this may also include a fingerprint check and clearance from the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services. Refer to the Application Checklist and Program Information for more information.

Fieldwork placement may also require government issued identification for vetting purposes. Students will need to have a United States issued Social Security Number (SSN).

Early admission

High school seniors and first-semester MU freshmen may be eligible to apply for early admission to the Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound program.

Early admission eligibility
  • Must be, at minimum, a high school senior but have no more than 30 credit hours of earned college credit
  • Hold a current GPA of 3.75 or proof of top 10% of class rank
  • Have a minimum composite ACT of 30 / SAT of 1330
All selected Early Admission students will need to:
  • Complete required pre-requisite and general education courses at the University of Missouri
  • Maintain continuous enrollment (excluding summers) at the University of Missouri
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA minimum of 3.50
  • Achieve a minimum of B- in all prerequisite courses
  • Make an appointment with the program director, Alice Townsend (alicetownsend@health.missouri.edu), to discuss your interest and application.
