Alexandra Lewis: Veteran, scholar and educator
Alexandria Lewis is a U.S. Army veteran and assistant teaching professor in the MU School of Social Work. Lewis joined the Army in 1993, and served in the Army band, also known as the infantry band. “I was a flute/piccolo player,” Lewis said. “One of my responsibilities included driving a bus to event locations to perform. I earned the Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Bar from this role.” While serving, she also received the Fort Rucker, Alabama, Soldier of the Month and Soldier of the Quarter. Another accomplishment that Lewis is proud of is her promotion to Sergeant (E-5).

Mansoo Yu appointed associate editor of the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research
March 1, 2021 Mansoo Yu, professor of social work and public health in the School of Health Professions, has been appointed associate editor of the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research (JSSWR). The journal is published by the Society for Social Work and Research, which is the premier social work research professional community. Yu’s research has been focused on health disparities and the interconnections of mental health, physical health and health risk behavior. His goal is to generate scientific evidence that practitioners in the field can use to better meet the needs of their clients.

Teresa Briedwell Receives Award for Outstanding Service
Feb. 25, 2021 Teresa Briedwell, associate department chair and teaching professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, received the award for Outstanding Service in the Area of Education from the Missouri Physical Therapy Association. This award acknowledges and honors members of MPTA whose contributions in the area of education, administration, research, practice, and service to the profession and community service have been of exceptional value. Tim Wolf named editor in chief of occupational therapy journal
Feb. 5, 2021 Tim Wolf, an associate professor and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy in the School of Health Professions, was recently named editor in chief of OTJR: Occupation, Participation, and Health. The international, peer-reviewed journal is one of the top journals in the field of occupational therapy and offers empirical and review articles. “I look forward to continuing on the work Dr. Classen [previous editor in chief] and the editorial board have completed as we continue to pursue our vision to be the top journal in occupational therapy,” Wolf said.

School of Social Work earns reaccreditation until 2028
Congratulations to the MU School of Social Work, which earned reaccreditation for its Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs until 2028. The School of Social Work has been continually accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) since 1919. Graduation from a CSWE accredited program is required for a social work license at the bachelors and masters level. Mizzou Social Work graduates have a higher-than-average pass rate on credentialing exams, as well. Mizzou faculty member has mentored more than 45 undergraduates, encouraging them professionally and personally. Mili Kuruvilla-Dugdale has inadvertently become the mentor she never had as a student — and her mentees at the University of Missouri, where she is an assistant professor of speech, language and hearing sciences, couldn’t be more grateful.

School of Social Work announces new administrative team
Aaron Thompson, the newly appointed Director of the School of Social Work, announced a new administrative team following his appointment. Carol Snively, associate teaching professor, will serve as the associate director of the School of Social Work. As associate director, Dr. Snively will assist Dr. Thompson with educational programs, student affairs, faculty teaching affairs and development of strategic initiatives to advance the school. She will also represent the school in the director’s absence. Special interests can be assets, not hindrances, for youth with autism
Jan. 15, 2021 Kerri Nowell, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Health Psychology and a pediatric clinical psychologist at the MU Thompson Center, together with colleagues Stephen Kanne, Cynthia Brown and Courtney Jorgenson, developed the survey for caregivers of youth with autism to assess various special interests they may have and determine if those special interests were interfering with the child’s development. Nuclear Medicine program earns reaccreditation
Dec. 21, 2020 The Mizzou Nuclear Medicine program earned reaccreditation for seven years from the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT) in November. Mizzou student goes from intern to executive director
Plenty of Mizzou grads use an internship to launch their career, though likely few have made the jump from unpaid intern to head of an organization in eight months. But Nicole Cope, who is graduating this week with her master’s of public health, is doing just that. Cope is set to become executive director of the Missouri Immunization Coalition, a nonprofit raising vaccine awareness. It’s a new beginning for Cope, who is also retiring from the Army Medical Corps after a decorated 23-year career, having earned the rank of master sergeant.
