The Mizzou Department of Health Psychology has been awarded a new federal training grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), recognizing the department’s continued leadership in clinical training, integrated care and service to Missourians.
The grant is supported through HRSA’s Graduate Psychology Education (GPE) mechanism — a highly competitive funding program available only to accredited psychology training programs. The Department of Health Psychology manages the only GPE-funded psychology training program in the state of Missouri, placing it among just 55 programs nationwide to receive this distinction.
“This award reflects the extraordinary dedication and expertise of our faculty and trainees,” said Crystal S. Lim, PhD, ABPP, chair of the Department of Health Psychology and Janet and John Farmer Endowed Faculty Scholar in Child Health. “It affirms the critical role that integrated, high-quality behavioral health services play in both health care delivery and workforce development across our state.”
Thanks in part to the HRSA training grant, the department’s clinical and training capacity continues to expand. Over the past two years, the department provided care for nearly 6,800 unique patients, accounting for 7,900 patient visits. Services include neuropsychological evaluation; behavioral health care for chronic health conditions and weight management; autism and ADHD evaluation; and adult concussion and traumatic brain injury care.
Training the next generation of psychologists
The HRSA GPE grant strengthens the department’s APA-accredited psychology internship program, offered through a consortium that includes the Department of Health Psychology, the Thompson Center for Autism & Neurodevelopment, and the VA. The program delivers immersive, hands-on training in medical and specialty settings, with a strong emphasis on integrated care.
The incoming 2026 internship class includes 10 predoctoral trainees, seven of whom are supported through the HRSA grant. In addition, the department is currently training five postdoctoral fellows. Collectively, these programs prepare psychologists to address complex behavioral health needs, serve medically underserved and rural populations, and advance interprofessional models of care across Missouri and beyond.
About the Department of Health Psychology
Housed in the Mizzou College of Health Sciences, the Department of Health Psychology is home to 10 faculty members who serve as clinicians, educators, supervisors and scholars. All faculty are licensed psychologists in the state of Missouri, and four are board certified in their specialty area.
Department faculty deliver evidence-based psychological services across campus locations in Clark Hall and at the Thompson Center for Autism & Neurodevelopment, working within interdisciplinary care teams that serve pediatric and adult populations.
Although modest in size, the department’s impact is amplified through collaboration with staff technicians, postdoctoral fellows and doctoral interns. Together, they support a robust clinical, teaching and training mission. The department generates more than $3 million annually in clinical billings, with approximately $1.9 million in collections in FY 2025, reflecting both high community demand and the value of integrated behavioral health care.
