School of Social Work faculty member wins Faculty Council Shared Governance Award
April 20, 2022 Alexandria Lewis, assistant teaching professor in the School of Social Work, received the individual Shared Governance Award from the MU Faculty Council last week. The award recognizes a member of the MU community who has made a significant contribution to shared governance. Below are excerpts from her nominator’s letter. “She brings her years of service in the U.S. Army to the Military and Veterans Campus Standing Committee, on which she has served since 2018. Veterans and military personnel can face special challenges in negotiating higher education, and they also bring commitment, talent, and skills that Alex recognizes.

A life of public service: Grace Nielson
April 14, 2022 Grace Nielson, a senior from Joplin, Missouri, knew she would dedicate her life to public service after her father passed away in the line of duty. At Mizzou, Nielson has gotten involved as a member of Tour Team, a peer educator for the RVSP Center, and undergraduate student representative for the Women’s Committee for the Chancellor. She is also a Truman Fellowship Finalist and Kinder Scholar. In the future, Nielson wants to go into political social work and create and lobby for domestic violence policies. March 29, 2022 Kathleen Preble, School of Social Work assistant professor, received the Jordan Hoyt Memorial Tribute to Women Award at the MU Tribute to Women banquet March 15. Burrell Behavioral Health to sponsor Social Work 100-year celebration
Burrell Behavioral Health is the Student Scholarship Sponsor for a 100-year celebration of social work at Mizzou this year. The sponsorship creates the Burrell Social Work Scholarship Endowed Fund, which will support social work students in perpetuity. The Student Training for Advanced Research (STAR) program was conceived to engage students in the high-impact practice of research. Treatment for trauma is not one-size-fits-all
Feb. 1, 2022 Researchers at the University of Missouri and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) have found that identifying trauma in probationers with mental illness can help tailor the treatment they need outside of a correctional facility and potentially reduce their risk of incarceration. “For the probationers that experienced serious mental illnesses, over two-thirds of them had experienced a significant number of traumatic events,” said Ashley Givens, an MU assistant professor in the School of Social Work, who interviewed 207 probationers with current mental illnesses about their trauma and analyzed how it was affecting them.
