Judith Goodman, associate dean for research at the MU School of Health Professions, will retire at the end of the Fall 2021 semester. She joined the University of Missouri in 1995 as an assistant professor.

“All of us in the School of Health Professions are grateful for Dr. Goodman’s leadership and service,” Dean Kristofer Hagglund said. “Throughout her tenure as a faculty member, chairperson and associate dean, Dr. Goodman has made many meaningful contributions to advance our school and facilitate the achievements of faculty members and students.”

As associate dean for research, Dr. Goodman facilitated robust increases in this area, including dramatic growth in external grant support and published manuscripts, Hagglund said.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with our faculty, who conduct meaningful and consequential research,” Dr. Goodman said. “Their research areas mesh well with initiatives on campus such as Next Gen and really have the potential to improve people’s lives.”

“I am also proud of our staff — Mary Clark, Dennis Johnson, Andrea Lawless, and Joe Sall — who help our faculty in so many ways,” Dr. Goodman continued. “They make the entire process easier from finding and applying for funding opportunities to managing award budgets.”

Prior to being named associate dean in 2017, Dr. Goodman served as chair of the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (then Communication Science and Disorders). During her 11-year tenure as chair, the program grew from about 90 students to 144 students per year. Clinic services expanded, as well, with a 75% increase in annual client visits and the addition of a toddler room to the Robert G. Combs Language Preschool. She served as interim co-chair for the Department of Health Sciences for the 2018–19 academic year.

Over the years, Dr. Goodman has received several awards for teaching and mentoring students, including the MU Graduate Professional Council Gold Chalk Award for Excellence in Teaching, the MU Office of Research Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, the Campus Writing Program Writing Intensive Teaching Excellence Award, and the School of Health Professions Outstanding Faculty Award.

“Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences alumni routinely speak of Dr. Goodman’s positive influence on their careers and lives,” Dean Hagglund said. “She has accomplished all of this through a commitment to service and a dedication to helping others.”
