Stepping In2Action for former inmates

Dan Hanneken photo by Rob Hill Dan Hanneken knows all too well that releasing a person from prison doesn’t free him from the problems, habits and environment that led to incarceration. In2Action, the residential transition program he founded and directs, provides drug-free housing for up to 50 former offenders…

Students serve Missouri through alternative breaks

March 17, 2022 Last weekend, several Health Professions students traveled to Poplar Bluff, Missouri, to serve at Cedargate Healthcare, a skilled nursing facility, on a Mizzou Alternative Breaks trip. The students spent a lot of one-on-one time with residents, crocheting with them and painting their nails. They also helped clean, did laundry, and passed out meal trays. Clockwise from top left are Jake Williams, Emily Dofing (Arts & Science), Bri Kimberley, Harper Russell, Daniya Mumtaz (Engineering) and Sydney Carlisle.

Getting Cheryl back to the things she loves

Dec. 15, 2021 Contact: Deidra Ashley, ashleyde@missouri.edu On Dec. 12, 2020, Columbia resident Cheryl Overstreet had a stroke in her brainstem. After eight days in University Hospital and another 17 at Rusk Rehabilitation Center, she headed home in a wheelchair — uncertain of her future. Would she be able to walk again? Would she regain full use of her left arm? Would she ever get back to doing the activities she loved? With the help of University of Missouri School of Health Professions practicum students, Overstreet is back on her feet, reclaiming control of her arm — and even…
