Public Health

Greetings from the chair

Julie Kapp
Julie Kapp, PhD

As Chair of the Department of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, at the University of Missouri, I am honored to welcome you to explore our teaching, research, and service offerings. We are a dynamic and purpose-driven academic community committed to transforming public health now and into the future through our unique offerings.

Teaching

We offer a menu of educational options to fit the needs of developing and busy professionals, including a bachelor’s degree of health science in public health, and a master’s in public health, along with multiple certificate options. Our department proudly upholds the highest standards of education by maintaining Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation since 2010 — a testament to our dedication to excellence and accountability. We are grounded in a vision that education, research, policy, and service must work hand in hand to advance population health outcomes and improve quality of life for all.

Our MPH program trains students on two important emphasis areas:

  1. Health Promotion and Policy: the intersection of public health and health policy through a partnership with the MU Truman School of Government and Public Affairs
  2. Veterinary Public Health: the intersection of public health and veterinary health through a partnership with the MU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Research

Our department has assembled a talented faculty from diverse disciplines, experiences, and perspectives to tackle pressing and timely health challenges. Please review our research page to learn about faculty expertise. We are also home to the Center for Health Policy, which partners with Missouri leaders to address health care quality and accessibility; and the Missouri Cancer Registry, an integral partner with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to address our nation’s surveillance and monitoring of cancer incidence.

Service

As a land grant university, we proudly partner with MU Extension on translating science into practice and community-driven initiatives. Several of our faculty have appointments with Extension, and we actively collaborate on our grants and research.

We look forward to partnering with you — whether you are a prospective student, a community collaborator, or a member of our academic family — as we work together to build healthier, more resilient communities.
