Treatment for trauma is not one-size-fits-all
Feb. 1, 2022 Researchers at the University of Missouri and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) have found that identifying trauma in probationers with mental illness can help tailor the treatment they need outside of a correctional facility and potentially reduce their risk of incarceration. “For the probationers that experienced serious mental illnesses, over two-thirds of them had experienced a significant number of traumatic events,” said Ashley Givens, an MU assistant professor in the School of Social Work, who interviewed 207 probationers with current mental illnesses about their trauma and analyzed how it was affecting them. Thanks to our incredible donors who fund scholarships, many Health Professions students receive financial assistance. Since the holiday season is known as the Season of Giving, over the past few weeks on our social media we featured a few scholarship recipients who want to pay the kindness forward by giving back to their communities with their careers. Fall 2021 Dean’s List
Jan. 18, 2022 Congratulations to 1,507 Health Professions students who made the Fall 2021 Dean’s List! Each school and college at the University of Missouri determines its own dean’s list eligibility for undergraduate students. Students who had privacy holds in MyZou are excluded from public lists. To qualify for the dean’s list in the School of Health Professions, a student must earn a 3.30 GPA in a minimum of 12 graded (A-F) credit hours. Dean’s list honors only apply to Fall and Spring semesters. Courses graded S/U or Hearer do not count toward the required 12 graded hours. Self-paced courses…

Margie Sable receives national award
Congratulations to Margie Sable, who received the Insley Evans Public Health Social Work award at the American Public Health Association conference. The award recognizes her outstanding service in the field. Dr. Sable, professor emerita, directed the School of Social Work from 2008–16. Dr. Sable completed her MSW at Washington University, and earned an MPH and DrPH from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. Her research interests included maternal and child health; adolescent pregnancy, psychosocial barriers to prenatal care and family planning; domestic violence; and perinatal substance abuse.

A Brighter Tomorrow: Burrell Behavior Health partners with MU to provide tuition assistance for social workers (KOMU)
COLUMBIA – Burrell Behavioral Health is partnering with the University of Missouri to provide tuition assistance for students pursuing a master’s in social work. The tuition assistance comes during a time of staffing shortages for mental health and health care workers. Burrell is incentivizing their staff members to pursue higher education in social work by giving a stipend of $10,000 to use toward MU’s tuition. How Columbia schools and FACE are teaming up to address mental health in students
In 2012, Boone County voters approved a quarter-cent sales tax, establishing the Boone County Children’s Services Fund and raising around $6.7 million annually for children’s programs. One of the programs the sales tax has funded has been Family Access Center of Excellence, operated through the University of Missouri.
