Shining bright

One of the defining characteristics of School of Health Professions students is their desire to improve lives. Physical Therapy represents at 2021 APTA Combined Sections Meeting

March 17, 2021 The Department of Physical Therapy is proud to highlight the scholarly activity of Mizzou DPT faculty, clinical partners, and students at the 2021 Combined Section Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Impressively, the department had over a dozen presentations, offered virtually, at the profession’s largest annual event. Presentations focused on sub-specialty topic areas including pediatrics, neurology, chronic pain, and educational research.  While live presentations were offered throughout February, recorded and on-demand content available will be available until the end of March 2021. Cheri Ghan creates scholarship fund for student ambassadors

If you’re struggling to believe in yourself, you always have one person in your corner: Cheri Ghan. A former journalist, Ghan came to Mizzou in 2006. Originally hired to manage communication for the School of Health Professions, she now leads student recruitment efforts for the school. Fall 2020 Dean’s List

Jan. 15, 2021 Congratulations to all students who made the Fall 2020 Dean’s List! Each school and college at the University of Missouri determines its own dean’s list eligibility for undergraduate students. Students who had privacy holds in MyZou are excluded from public lists. To qualify for the dean’s list in the School of Health Professions, a student must earn a 3.3 GPA in a minimum of 12 graded (A-F) credit hours. Dean’s list honors only apply to Fall and Spring semesters. Courses graded S/U or Hearer do not count toward the required 12 graded hours. Self-paced courses must be…

Mizzou student goes from intern to executive director

Plenty of Mizzou grads use an internship to launch their career, though likely few have made the jump from unpaid intern to head of an organization in eight months. But Nicole Cope, who is graduating this week with her master’s of public health, is doing just that. Cope is set to become executive director of the Missouri Immunization Coalition, a nonprofit raising vaccine awareness. It’s a new beginning for Cope, who is also retiring from the Army Medical Corps after a decorated 23-year career, having earned the rank of master sergeant.

Daring to Care – Social Work alumna supports students

Tiffany Le, a graduate student in occupational therapy, was nervous at first. Like other students seeking financial assistance from the Care Team at Mizzou, she would be sitting down for a one-on-one meeting with the team’s coordinator, Nicole Logue, MSW ’16. “Will she judge me?” Le wondered. “Will she understand why I desperately need this?” Due in part to regional stay-at-home orders, dozens of students found themselves out of work and grappling with such fears as they sought emergency funding. As the nation began to realize the scope of the crisis, Mizzou’s Care Team took stock locally.

Celebrity Therapist

James McCorkle has used a wheelchair for most of his six years of life, and, for much of that time, he has been a client at the School of Health Professions’ PhysZOU clinic. That’s where he met physical therapy student Mark Weleaga, who quickly realized that McCorkle needed to improve his wheelchair skills. “During my first session with James, we had to encourage him a lot to get him to do different wheelchair skills and play games,” Weleaga says. Masters Students Help Fill Critical Need for Case Investigators in Boone County

Missouri has entered its sixth month of navigating the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and for dozens of health departments across the state, CARES Act funding has been slow to arrive. That means crucial public-health positions like contact tracers and case investigators have been left unfilled. So, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services has found one creative stop-gap – Masters in Public Health student volunteers.
